Father’s Day Blog 2022: “Click to Opt-Out”
15 June 2022
Like many people, I do much of my shopping online these days. As a result, my email inbox is full of the usual correspondence from retailers, promoting their latest offers and sales, especially when it comes to seasonal gift giving, Christmas (obviously), Spring sales, Summer specials, Black Friday (whatever that’s about), Mother’s Day and of course Father’s Day.
This year, an email the likes of which I have not seen before appeared in my inbox:
My initial reaction was, “that’s a bit odd”, but as my lockdown Ask Dad Father’s Day blog from 2020 pointed out, relationships within families can be complicated and occasions such as this can trigger deep emotions. It serves as a reminder that although many of us will be able to see or speak to our fathers or our children this Sunday, there are many who cannot.
On reflection, I can see why the retailer felt it necessary to take this tack with their Father’s Day promotion. The retail sector is rarely somewhere we look to for moral guidance but in this case, they may be right. Enjoy Father’s Day, celebrate with fathers and children and be kind to those who won’t be.
