Going Forward and Dunedin Canmore Youth Project (DCYP)
09 February 2023
Clair Borland, Youth Worker at Dunedin Canmore Youth Project (DCYP) in Edinburgh has given us her thoughts on the delivery, and impact, of Going Forward sessions at DCYP in Edinburgh.
Can you tell us a bit about DCYP?
DCYP is a joint initiative between Dunedin Canmore Housing and City of Edinburgh’s Community Learning & Development service operates in community venues across south east and south west Edinburgh.
We work closely with both Liberton and Gracemount High School – with early intervention work, as well as delivery NOLB (previously known as Activity Agreement) we provide young people with a positive destination after leaving school – introducing them to new avenues of work, training or further education, we also work on young people’s confidence, motivation and team building.
How have the Going Forward sessions integrated with the work that you already deliver?
We currently deliver two Give It A Go (GIAG) sessions within Gracemount and Liberton for S4 pupils who aren’t engaging well with school. Within these sessions we look at team building, confidence, what they may like to do when they can/do leave school and in,some cases get young people, to re-engage with school on a more regular basis.
Fast Forward’s Going Forward sessions allowed us to approach issues regarding drug and alcohol use, with a fountain of knowledge and interaction.
What did you particularly like about the sessions?
The sessions are full of information, with great use of interaction while delivering the session in a difficult time due to COVID regulations.
What sort of impact do you think the sessions have had on the young people that you support?
The sessions have given young people more information on the choices they have made and are going to make. With the information they have gained, to make better decisions in the future.
Would you recommend Going Forward to another project and would you be interested in continuing to receive Going Forward sessions in the future?
I would definitely would recommend the Going Forward sessions. Indeed, we hope to have them back to deliver more sessions for some of the new groups we have in the future.
