Going Forward: Drink Spiking

This workshop will highlight how we have responded to this emerging issue, and supported young people to design and develop their own resources.

Supporting children and young people to make informed choices about their own health and wellbeing lies at the heart of our work. We achieve this by providing experiential learning based on accurate information and through peer inspiration. This workshop will look at how we have worked with young people to design, develop and deliver a new workshop and film resource that both focus on Drink Spiking.

Going Forward Junior: Vaping – ‘that’s smoking for kids…’

Over the last few months, we have been becoming increasingly concerned about the incidence of children and young people vaping and had an increase in the number of requests for session focusing on e-cigarettes and vapes.

  • Young people’s awareness of e-cigarettes has increased from 64% in 2013 to 90% in 2022.
  • 13.9% of 11-17 year olds had tried vapes in 2020 (prior to the first lock down).
  • In 2022, 42.1% of children & young people believe that e-cigarettes are less harmful than tobacco. (ASH London)

This session will give you more information about the current situation, and ideas for some activities to use with children & young people to raise their awareness of the health impacts of vaping.

Ask Dad: The Invisible Parent

Supporting men in parenting roles who feel marginalised to communicate more effectively with service providers and working with service providers to illustrate to them the benefits of focusing, not just on biological mothers, but all adults in a parenting role within the family set-up.

Over the past four years, the Ask Dad Project has been working with fathers, many of whom have experience of negative interactions with family services such as education, health, social work or the courts. At best, some fathers reported feeling like second-class parents in these interactions; at worst, they have felt judged to be the cause of a problem or an aggressor. After working with Ask Dad on their communication-skills and understanding of what services can realistically do and not do, to support them, these fathers experienced an improvement in their interactions with those services.

Scottish Gambling Education Hub: The Story So Far

This year, the Scottish Gambling Education Hub reaches its 5th year of work engaging those working with children, young people, families and communities in gambling education and prevention across Scotland.

In this session, we share our highlights of 2022 – from supporting young people to take the lead in gambling education through our youth fund, to responding to emerging trends and developments related to gambling harm through our special topic webinars about cryptocurrency and the cost of living crisis. Join us for an opportunity to reflect back on the past year, and a sneak peak into the future work of the Scottish Gambling Education Hub.
