Sharing Youth Fund success: The Toon, a youth-led drama production
11 July 2022
In this post, Tina from the Scottish Gambling Education Hub shares the case study of a youth-led project funded by the Gambling Education Youth Fund.
We were delighted to provide funding towards The Toon – a youth-led issue based drama production presented at Youth Beatz festival, organised by Youth Work Dumfries & Galloway.
The project was designed by local young people at every stage. The young people developed it throughout the 2-week long Toon Camp, including:
- Script writing
- Character development
- Set and scenery design
- Stage and special effects
- Costume design
- Make-up
- Acting
Designed like a walk-through experience, The Toon explored gambling harms as one of many issues affecting young people, highlighting risks through storytelling and raising awareness of the support available to those experiencing harm.
“I don’t know what we’d do without my Nana. She had to pay last month’s rent because she [Mum] threw it away to all them sites. She thinks I don’t know, but I see and hear everything. […] And my Nana cannae be affording to bail us out because she’s not well. Anyway, I’m away to drop in. I hope Colin’s got the Gregg’s, because I’m starving and she’ll have no money to give me.”
The project is a great example of how gambling education can be addressed using youth-led and co-productive approaches. For more information on our Gambling Education Youth Fund, visit: http://bit.ly/GamblingEducationYouthFund.
