Volunteer Linz’ trip to Madrid with Youth in Action
31 July 2013
Hi, I’m Linz and I’m a volunteer with Fast Forward.
I’ve been working on a research initiative looking at raising awareness of peer pressure, self-esteem and bullying in 5-11 year olds.
With the help and supervision of Volunteers Co-ordinator, Chiara Marin, we have proposed a project that would involve designing a software based, interactive storybook where children can seek advice and guidance from a relatable, fictional character whose age and status is similar if not equal to their own.
I am currently searching funding opportunities. If successful, my aim will be to pilot this in youth groups prior to approaching schools. In addition, this resource will be strengthened by theatre workshops in which children can act out and develop strategies to overcome particular issues.
In April, I took my idea to a training workshop in Madrid organised by Youth In Action entitled ‘From Idea To Action’ (FITA). Whilst testing the feasibility of the project, participants learnt different methods of designing, marketing and implementing their projects. The workshop ran over 5 days and consisted of a variety of interactive sessions, lectures and visits to established initiatives.
In this time we developed presentation skills, learnt how to formulate a business plan, considered the skills and tools required for each stage of our project, sought feedback and were introduced to new friends.
Subsequently, I put together a presentation covering the different aspects of my research and concluded an effective research plan. This involves multiple stages, as follows:
1. An in-depth two part literature review looking at the method of Early Intervention in regards to Social Issues; and Storytelling as a vehicle for social change. This will be undertaken whilst applying for funding.
2. Qualitative interviews with parents, teachers, youth workers and other professionals in order to gauge the exact issues facing this age range and if we were to develop a ‘tool’, how they would visualise this.
3. Tool design – based on the research outcomes and participant feedback we will seek to design and implement our resource.
4. Evaluation and Review
If this sounds like a project you would like to be involved in whether through contributing skills or conducting research, please get in touch with either myself or Chiara.
