Youth Fund Showcase: Govan Youth Information Project’s report on gambling ads

05 February 2024

We are delighted to share a new Youth Fund project by young people at Govan Youth Information Project (GYIP).

In 2020 a group of young people from GYIP completed a Youth Fund project called Booze, Bet, Bust. The young people mapped the gambling venues in the Govan area and nearby more affluent areas, Bearsden and Milngavie. They found more alcohol and gambling establishments in Govan. That finding is mirrored by a University of Bristol report on gambling venues in areas with higher levels of deprivation.

In their newest project, they updated their community mapping exercise, to see whether things have changed.

They found that Govan area still has more gambling establishments and places to play the lottery or buy scratch cards than the more affluent areas of Bearsden and Milngavie. In fact, the gap has increased, with an increase of 11 gambling venues in Govan compared to just 2 for Bearsden and Milngavie.

“We feel that we as a community in Govan are still being targeted by these gambling organisations and that something should be done to lessen the number of bookies and lotto merchants in the area. During this tough time for families, this should not be in their faces and be causing great concern and harm to many people across the countries in areas just like ours. We want places like football and other sports to be more responsible with how they advertise gambling.”
